  1. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

In my case I don't have to imagine because I have experiences where I have done this with students as young as 5 and as old as 55. As a kindergarten teacher for the 100th day of school the three kindergarten classes would collect 100 items for the food pantry in LaPorte County that they were in dire need of. For example in my class the kindergartners collected 100 bars of soap, the other two classes collected 100 tubes of toothpaste and 100 rolls of toilet paper. These were then donated to the food pantry. The children learned the concept of 100 and grouping by 2's, 5's, and 10's. As well as learning the academics they also learned how to be a social activist and make the world a better place. In my college classrooms we have done several service learning projects to make an impact on our world.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

This is very important for teachers to do in order to instill a sense of caring in our society. In the Amish community if someone is in need the whole community comes together to help the person out. In typical american societies today we have a lack of empathy and if as teachers we don't begin to help students see that there are others who are in need we will remain the same apathetic society we have been since the industrial revolution.

Teachers should raise the consiousness level of students to create a caring, peaceful world. Too many individuals are very egocentric and worry only about themselves but the true meaning of life comes when we can focus on ways in which we can make the world a better place. For example, right now, at the Purdue West Lafayette campus there are two male students known as the compliment guys and they provide random compliments to students. To hear about their story check out http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2009/mar/13/nation/chi-compliment-guys-13-mar13
This is an example of how we can raise the consciousness

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

Textbooks are tools for learning just like recipe books are tools for cooking. We don't start with the first page of cookbook and go through the entire book to create meals. We pick and choose what meals will work with our families. Textbooks are the same they are resources for learning but they are not the only tool we have for learning. Current events, things that are happening in our classrooms are all situations that need to be considered when designing curriculum. As a person I believe in a balanced approach. Anything that we do too much of isn't going to be good. So if we focus only on designing curriculum based on textbooks we limit the learning that can occur. And the same is true if we only focus on real world events. As a teacher my philosophy is that we need to have a combination of both. Textbooks can be inaccurate or they can present information that is biased. Textbooks also don't know our students and planning curriculum should be based on the needs of the students.

  2. Pay It Forward Video Responses:

    1. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

I feel that as a teacher a very big part of my job is to create good, respectable characters out of my students. I will do so by being a good role model for them, and showing good human qualities that get you far in today’s society. Aside from teaching educational curriculum, I want to instill responsibility, honesty, hard work, and respect into my students. Focusing on life skills on top of the everyday work assignments will teach my students to not just be smart, good students, but also smart, good people all around, which is what this world really needs.

    2. How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

This is very appropriate, and I think it is not done as often as it should. I, myself, was not forced or even asked to be caught up on the “worlds issues.” I never watched the news or read newspapers early on in my life. I can honestly say that until my senior year I can’t recall one assignment that I did regarding world affairs. This is sad to me, because it shows how self consumed and selfish I was being. But at the same time I feel the need to put blame on my teachers, and parents as well. In order to create well rounded human beings, I feel like we need to show an interest in what’s going on around the world, not just around us at the time. If students have to think outside the box and be current on world issues, they will have a better understanding of how life really is, and I think it will give them a better sense of appreciation for what they have.

    3. Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

Teachers should incorporate as much of a variety of different medias as possible. This includes both curriculum based on text books and real world events. This will mix up the work for students and keep them interested. I have had classes where it was strictly text book lessons, and this gets very boring and tired quickly. It is our jobs as teachers to keep the children engaged and enthusiastic about learning. The classroom needs to have fun, hands on activities, group work, individual work, internet based assignments, book/research assignments. Every child learns differently, it’s our job to find out the best way to get across the information to our students.

1.I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

In the video, the children feel as if they are too young to be expected to change the world. I feel like many children might feel this way about themselves. Some children do not have the confidence or the courage that is needed to believe in themselves. When I become a teacher, I want to be sure that I let my students know that they are all capable of making a difference in the world. Letting my students know I believe in them, will in return give them the confidence to believe in their selves. In my opinion, believing in your students is one of the most important factors in being a good teacher and something that I will make sure to do when I become a teacher.

2.How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the conscousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I feel like it is not only appropriate but also very important for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings. The video clip portrays that many children are unfamiliar with things that take place beyond their front door. Although it is the parents’ decision on whether or not to inform their children of these things, it is important that they learn it somewhere and somehow. Children need to be aware and experience the ways of the world before they are set free and on their own. The world can be full of disappointment and obstacles. Without previous knowledge of the problems human beings face in the world, it can be very challenging and sometimes almost impossible for a child to overcome these problems. I feel like it would be my job as a teacher to inform children of some of these problems if they are not learning of them elsewhere. Teachers are supposed to help children learn and become prepared for adulthood. Discussing this topic with your students is helping them to learn and also become prepared for what lies ahead.

3.Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

I think it is important for teachers to design curriculum based on the text book as well as real world events. It is important for children to know of the things that are going on in our world today like I mentioned in my previous answer. I think it would be very beneficial to teach students the text book material and then imply it to things that are occurring in our world today. This process would not only teach children of current events but I think comparing the text book material to real life would help them to better understand the material.

  4. I can imagine myself challenging my students to change the world to make it better. I think everyone has a part of their mind that is innovative. A part of the brain that is constantly trying to make new and better changes. I hope to engage that aspect of my students mind. It may be by thinking of a way to change a specific piece of the world, or something more broad. Where the students want to go with their thoughts are completely up to them. Their ideas may be realistic or fairy tale. I won’t grade them based on content, it may just be for grammar, and/or spelling. For example, a student may want to think of a way to make his/her go cart run faster. So they may think of a way to better the engine to increase the speed, or be unrealistic and say to replace the wheels with rockets. This is not making the world better, but it is engaging to think like that and try to make something or anything better. Hopefully with further direction they will pick something geared to bettering the earth, such as trying to decrease pollution. Who knows where a child’s mind may go? That one of the great pleasures of teaching.
This is very important to raise conscious level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings. They need to engage their mind to find a solution when a problem like such may occur in their life. It is especially important to do this in school, because if they can’t find a solution themselves they will be able to learn one in school. We are always looking for solutions to everyday problems, and students should always be encouraged to find new and better ways around their problems. Our students will encounter different problems from what we did. It is our jobs as teachers to not only teach them math, science, english, etc., but also prepare them for life.
Teachers should design a curriculum based on both the text book, and real world events. This is a good way for the students to be educated current events and can easily be tied into the curriculum. For example, with the war in Iraq, spelling could be based on terms associated with the war. In english, they could write a prompt on how to stop the war, how to help our troops or so on. This is how I would run a curriculum with the text book and world events.

  5. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

I can see myself in the future trying to make my kids make the world a better place. I remember when Hurricane Katrina hit the shores, what a terrible mess it made. My teacher gave everyone in my class a pen pal from a school that had been destroyed in New Orleans. We were to write to our new friend and talk to them about what was going on. It was our job to try and comfort them and send them school supplies to help with their new school. By helping donate backpacks full of books and paper, we were doing our part in the world to help out those in need. I am going to do the same kind of thing in my classroom to make my student’s realize what a big role they play in everyone’s heart.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I think it is very appropriate for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings. Many children have no idea what is happening around them. They rely fully on their parents in order to know what is happening in the world and even their community. I think that teachers should help inform their children as to what is happening in the current news in order to let them prepare for the future. This also helps children get more involved in their community and help out those around them.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

I think teachers should design the curriculum after taking both text books and real world events into consideration. I think we should use text books as more as an outline when we teach. There are key events in those text books that students need to be taught, but the students also need to know what is going on outside of that book. They need to have something current in history to compare to. Besides the content level, textbooks can get boring if the teacher is reading them word for word. Mixing things up and exploring both strategies can increase the student’s understanding of the material.

  6. 1. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.
I can definitely see myself doing that. Service is very important to me, and I believe that students can benefit from that experience. I would want to incorporate things in my classroom like pen pals, cleaning up parks and volunteering in other ways. I would challenge them to think of a way to make the school or community better and try to help them put that into practice.

    2. How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.
I think that it is definitely appropriate with older students. I think that with younger students, you have to think about what problems you’re teaching them about, because some children may not be capable of understanding such problems. For example, I would teach older students about hunger and poverty, but I would teach younger students about things that might relate to their lives, such as feelings or family issues that many people may experience. If you teach students about those universal problems, they will gain a sense of humanity that they may not have otherwise.

    3. Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.
I believe that there should be a balance of both curriculum and real world teaching. We are obligated to follow the curriculum set by the standards, and text books can be great resources to teach some concepts that you can’t readily learn hands-on. Real world events are not only interesting and engaging, they can help students realize that the curriculum they’re learning has a basis in reality, and it will help them have a deeper understanding of the concept.

  7. 1. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students, because I do it every day with my daughter. I know it will be in a way different, because it will no longer be one child. Letting the children know that anything is possible, and to always help those in need. When I was in Iraq I received hundreds of letters from kids who supported us. I never knew that children that I never met could make me feel so needed. Their words inspired me, a grown women to want to do the same when I came back home. Now I tell my daughter the same thing, and we send support cards, and care packages to our soldiers now. Children can really make a difference if we show them the way.

    2. How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I don’t know if it’s appropriate. I think that it all depends on the problem. I believe that it could be both the teachers and parent’s job. What if the parents don’t want their children to know certain things, because they think it might affect them in their daily activities. Or maybe the parents want to be the ones to explain certain things to them in their own way. I really think it all depends.

    3. Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

I think that teachers should design curriculum based on both text books and real world events, because we don’t want the past to be forgotten, or what we went through to get where we are today. How technology has improved. Then again we also need them to know what is going on around them when it comes to global events.

  8. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

I am excited to challenge my students to change the world to make it better. The teacher in the movie has passion about making a change in the world, and I think that is inspiring. I think it is a great idea to tie action in with lessons. For example, studying greenhouse effect in science, at the end of the lesson plant a tree on school grounds. If the effects of pollution are being taught, try having a recycle contest in the classroom to see how much can be collected in one week. I think that demonstrating positive actions that can be taken, it helps to instill these ideas in the students.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the conscousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I think it is important to try to raise the conscousness level of students. Then students can better understand the world around them and how they relate to it and effect it with their actions. I think it is good to make students consider and be aware of things in the world that they probably haven't thought about before. I think this will help to make students not be as self-centered and be better prepared for the future.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

I think teachers should design curriculum based on a combination of both. The textbook is a good basis to start from and mixing in real world events adds to the student's ability to relate the text book to real life. I think that may real world events can help illustrate the material being taught in the text book. By examining real world events, it helps to raise awareness in the students. Also, adding real world events adds interest and helps students understand the world around them.

  9. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

I think that this would be a very improtant part of being a teacher. Most students look up to their teachers. Being a good role model can help our students be better people. I also liked what Becky said about having pen pals. That is a great outreach program for students to get to know other students from other areas and to be able to impact their lives as well.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the conscousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I think that it is important for teachers to inform students about problems that they may face. Depending on your grade level, you could always have a current problems discussion and have a problem solving session. This could help students be more aware of their surroundings and what they will face in the future.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

I think that teachers should base their curriculum on both. Just like I said in response to the following question, it is good to have our students aware of what is happening in the world. I also think that it is still important to stick to some of the basics in the cirriculum. Students still need to learn what has been taught all these years.

I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.
Thinking back on my early school life, the most inspiration came from teachers challenging vs. just reading from the text. I would use this practice every chance that was given.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.
The more children are aware of the world around them the more focused they become. Also, I believe that if students start to think and believe their actions could actually change their lives they might think before acting and act with dignity.
Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.
In teaching today we have to cover the text book and prepare for testing, although if you are able to intergrad events and challenges the students will be more inclined to remember and carry the information with them.

  11. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

Take the world as you find it, but leave it a better place. I would have this posted in big bold letters in my classroom. This would be somewhere where everybody can always see it, where if they were board or were sitting down before class they would be able to take a second to think about it. This world can be a better place and every student has the ability to change the world. I would challenge my students to get involved in the community, charity, and teaching others to do the same. Leaders can be developed and leaders can develop more positive leaders. I would challenge my students to become positive leaders that develop leaders. Overtime, this will make the world better.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I think it is very appropriate. I think that the some of the most brilliant minds in the world were never developed because they were never asked to tackle something that challenged them in a way to think outside the box. If I blew into a saxophone today and a note came out, that would be something that anyone could do. But how could I make music without taking the time to challenge myself to learn how to play a melody or a new song? If we don’t challenge problems progression the music would stop and the world would be a silent place.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

I think it should be a combination of both. Curriculum is there and has been developed over years and years to help kids learn in the best of ways. But if you can’t apply what you learned to real world events, there is absolutely no point in even learning it. I was having trouble in the 4th grade learning how to add and subtract fractions. A girl in my class made a comment to me jokingly saying “when are we ever going to use this? Adding and subtracting fractions? What’s the point!?” I laughed and agreed. I went home and my Dad had to help me with my math homework that night. Trying to be funny I looked at him and said “When am I ever going to use this? Adding and subtracting fractions? What’s the point!?” He looked at me and said “I built this house adding and subtracting fractions, I use this every day.” That put it in perspective for me, and if it weren’t for my Dad, I probably would still not care and maybe not even know how to add and subtract fractions.

Learning is an expeirence for everyone. Rather you are entering pre-k or getting ready to graduate college. I believe the more that a child knows about the world and changes occuring the better understanding of what is going on out there in the real world. In order to succeed in teaching my students I am going to make learning fun and be a good role model so my students come prepared and ready to learn.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.
I feel it is very important for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings. In the Amish community if someone is in need the whole community comes together. There is a lack of this im the American community. Coming together as a whole is very important and could help others understand what is going on. Teaching students about those universal problems will gain a sense of humanity that may not have been there before.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.
I think it should definatly be a combination of both! There is a lot of world events that need to be taught to students, but through a textbook is not the best way. It can make things very boring and may be hard to comprehend for young people. If children are learning world facts and having fun when doing it they easily become part of society and stay involved.

  13. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

When kids are at the elementary level of education everyday should bring a new learning experience. For us teachers it is our job to make sure of that. I feel that it is very important for the teachers to challenge the students with different issues on a daily basis and not just school related issues but real world issues as well. The teachers need to be filling their students minds with positive information so the students can then take the information and pass it along making the world a better place.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the conscousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I think that it is very appropriate for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students. Students need to be aware of everything that is out in this crazy world of ours. There is a certain level of appropriateness that teachers need to be aware of though, some things just shouldn't be told to a first grader.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

Teachers should definitely design curriculum based on a combination of a text book and real world events. It is very important to intertwine both of these because they are both completely different but at the same time are both crucial to living. There is a lot that students can learn through text books but ultimately the best way to learn something is do actually go through it yourself.

  14. 1) I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.

I can imagine myself as trying to help my students to change the world, as well as teach them their regular curriculum. I think it is very important to mold the children, along with their minds. If we can find away to connect with them and teach them that they can make a differance, in my opinion, they would be more willing and eager to learn.

    2) How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the conscousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.

I believe that it is appropriate because they are the generation of the future. I feel as though people often belittle kids, and push them aside. I believe that we should embrace children and their thoughts and give them a more active roll in their life and the world around them.

    3) Should teachers design curriculum based on the text book, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.

There has to be a happy medium in this instance. I believe that the basic curriculum is vitally important, but it should'nt be the only thing kids learn in their 13 years of schooling. Teachers spend almost as much time with children as their own parents. Teaching children about the realities of the world are just part of the job description

  15. I can imagine myself as a teacher challenging my students to change the world to make it better. Explain.
I truly believe that as teachers, we have a direct effect on how the children in our classes grow. At an elementary age, kids take in everything that adults say. They spend almost an entire year under our supervision, that’s like 30% of their life up to that point. I would definitely want to influence my kids in a way that I think would better them as growing individuals.
I think I would start with talking about the environment and how important it is that they take care of it. All the other subjects we study are, of course, important. But what happens when there is no world left to apply what they’ve learned in school? I would start recycling in the classroom, and start a program in the school if there wasn’t already one. I would also convey to my students the importance of land preservation and animal protection. I would hope that by going over these topics everyday, and making a habit out of recycling and being eco-friendly, the kids would take these practices with them throughout their entire lives.

How appropriate is it for teachers to raise the consciousness level of students in regard to the problems that confront all human beings? Explain.
When it comes to bringing up in-depth problems to younger students, I’m a little indecisive. I think it all depends on the situation, and how old the students are. In the video, the kids were at least 12 or 13 years old. They were old enough to comprehend what their teacher was trying to explain. However, I don’t think that the “questions of life” would be a wise topic to bring up with first and second graders. Whether to bring up these topics or not depends on the age of the students and how far a teacher is taking the discussion.

Should teachers design curriculum based on the textbook, real world events, or a combination of both? Explain.
I strongly believe that curriculum should be based equally on textbooks and real world events. Both are extremely important for the growth and development of kids. Books will always be a primary source of learning. No matter how much we advance in this world, no one will ever be able to erase the writings of famous authors and scholars. Real world experience is also important, to me. A person could be a genius, but still not make it in life because of a lack of street smarts. I believe that one without the other is completely worthless in today’s society.
