Classroom Management

Two types of classroom management that teachers often possess is high control or low control. High control is when classrooms are very teacher centered, structured and the teachers have an authoritarian attitude about how children should behave and what they should do. Low control is a more student centered approach with teachers viewing the environment as that of a community and the community members aid in creating the rules and acceptable behaviors for the classroom.

I believe teachers should have only a enough control to teach the students who is in charge. This control would make the students listen and respect the teacher. However, I feel like teachers should not have enough control over their students to where the students feel as if their opinions do not matter. The interests of children is what should be most important in the classroom and they should not be overlooked due to an over controlling teacher.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.

Yes it is appropriate for teachers to yell at their students, but only when it is needed. If a student is repeatedly misbehaving or being direspectful, then would be the time to yell at the student. Although, a teacher should never believe to have the authority to yell at a student like the teacher in kindergarten cop did. If a teacher is constantly disciplining and yelling at his or her students, the only type of respect the students will continue having for the teacher is forced respect.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?

I believe that children in our society learn a lot about learning to participate in a democracy from the classroom. Childen are taught in Kindergarten to treat one another with equal respect. For many years after kindergarten children are taught many ways of how to interact with new people and situations before becoming adults and entering into the real world.

A teacher should be in total control of their students at all times. It is super important that their student’s respect them and can listen and follow directions. If an emergency situation were to come up, the students would act in a calm manner knowing that all they had to do was listen to their teacher. This would also be a reassuring fact for the teacher because they wouldn’t have to worry about student’s talking back or just running out of the classroom. It is also important to have a lot of control over the students when it comes to teaching. If there is no control, then they will not be able to learn. For example, if there is a trouble maker in the class that is always clowning around and not listening, they are not the only one not learning, but the teacher then has to stop class and this holds the other students back from learning as well.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.
I don’t think it is ever appropriate to raise one’s voice or react emotionally in front of students. I believe that if a child is a trouble maker, then the teacher should take them aside and talk to them about the situation instead of making it into a big confrontation in front of the entire class. If the whole class is out of line, the teacher can turn the lights out and make them put their heads down on the desk. This not only makes the kids think about what they did wrong, but it gives the teacher a chance to cool down. Yelling, I don’t believe will get the teacher very far. The teacher will have a hard time motivating the kids in the classroom if they are scared of them.

I think children have an idea of what a democracy is in elementary school, but they may not know it by that particular word. When I was in third grade, my teacher would make my entire class sit in a circle on the floor when we were misbehaving. We would have a few representatives from our class tell the teacher what went wrong and how we were going to fix the problem. This was not just a punishment, but my teacher would do this any time we were struggling with something that had come up in the classroom. We were not disciplined but were able to talk about our feelings on the situation. This gave us an idea of a democracy without actually calling it one.

I feel that it is important for teachers to have control over their classroom, but they should still be able to create a relaxed and comfortable environment with that. Teachers that treat their students as equals will be respected dmore than teachers who act like their classroom is a boot camp. I have personally had both thypes of classroom settings, and the teacher who acted as a drill sargeant made for an uncomfortable learning environment. As teachers, we should allow students to explore and I don't feel that is going to happen if a teacher has extremely strict classroom policies about authority, etc.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not?

I feel that as a teacher, you should NEVER yell at your students or react with emotions out of frustrations or anger. If you are having a bad start to the day, you need to check that at the door and realize that a negative attitude can brush off on your students if you allow it to. When I become a teacher, will I think it is appropriate for a student to yell at me if I do something wrong? You have to treat your students the same way you want to be treated as their teacher. Yelling and blowing up on your students is a poor example of teaching in my opinion... if you need a moment, step out of your classroom to regain your composure.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?

I feel that children learn to participate in a democracy through the classroom. Like Brandi said, many students will probably not realize what exactly it means by the word democracy, but will understand through their actions. I feel that Student Council and Student Government in the Elementary aged schools is a great way to introduce students to this idea.

  4. How much control do you believe teachers should have over their students?
While it's nice to have total control of a situation or a group of people because things go exactly the way you want, it's just not realistic, especially with children. I believe that there should be enough respect for the teacher that students will comply with her wishes. A well-managed classroom has no need for control. Plus, it's less stressful for the teacher to not have to worry about maintaining control over students at all times because she's helped create a peaceful, respectful climate in her classroom.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.
I don't believe it is ever appropriate to yell at students. I think that yelling is one way of asserting our control on someone. I know that yelling is an automatic response to some situations. But, there is no place for it in the mutually respectful relationships we build with students in our classroom. If we yell at them, they will yell at us, and we will have another power struggle.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?
If people do not learn to participate in a democracy when they're children, how can we expect them to be able to participate when they're adults? We certainly don't have citizenship or democracy classes for adults after they graduate high school. Children need to be encouraged to participate in democratic processes like voting and debating in meaningful ways in school. An example would be students contributing to the creation of classroom guidelines for the year. Or, a student can respectfully disagree with another student's answer or statement, and the teacher can encourage a fair debate.

  5. How much control do you believe teachers should have over their students?

I think that is very important for the students to know and respect the fact that the teacher has the authority in the classroom. It is also important for the students to feel comfortable in the classroom and to have the feeling that their opinion matters and it isn't always going to be the way that the teacher wants it to be. While teaching a lesson it is crucial for the teacher to have control over the students otherwise the students will be completely scatterbrained and will not pay attention because they don't feel that they have to.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not?

I feel that is it is very inappropriate for a teacher to yell at their students. Reprimanding a student and yelling at them are two completely different things. I do think that is okay for the teacher to pull the student aside and talk to them about what just happened and make it clear to them that what they did was not okay and make sure that the student has a clear understanding that what they just did should not be repeated again.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?

I think that the children in our society learn to participate in a democracy in the classroom. I don't think that when the students are younger they will be able to identify what they are doing as democracy simply because they don't know the exact definition of the word. Throughout elementary, middle and high school we always had some sort of student council groups that we were able to be a part of, I feel that these sorts of groups really help students understand and participate in democracy.

  6. How much control should teachers have over their students? I would prefer a low control classroom. I like the children to feel the support of the environment around them. If they make their own rules they will be more inclined to follow them. If you let the children in on running the classroom they will feel more involved and want to fill that void in doing their part. I want the students to understand that I am the ultimate authority but I want them to feel like they have some control and say in their daily classroom life.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at your students, why or why not?
I don't think so. There are other ways of being stern and holding your ground. No child deserves to be yelled at regardless of their behavior. I dont want a child to fear me, I want him or her to understand the consequences to their actions by having a constructive punishment. Its also a bad example and shows children that its okay to get out of hand when things go wrong.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy? I believe that children somewhat learn the structures of democracy in school. Usually they learn about elections and have some type of voting systems within their classroom. I think its not so much that they are learning about democracy but that they are learning that majority rules. The actual democracy system is much more complex than that. But I do believe that clubs, student councils, and other extra curricular activities do help children to understand democracy.

  7. In a classroom there needs to be a known equal respect between the students and the teachers. The children need to know that the teacher is the head of the room. The teacher makes the rules, and the rules should be followed. Students should be punished if they act out and do not follow the rules, but at the same time students should feel comfortable to have opinions and speak thier minds IN A RESPECTFUL WAY. As far as having contorl in a classroom, the teacher should have control at every given moment, but that doesn't mean that the children aren't talking, and aren't having a good time.

I do not think that it is ever appropriate to yell at students in front of other students. I have been in situations where teachers yell, and I think it just creates more chaos and bad energy. There are ways to go about being stern and holding to your ground without actually yelling at a student. Honestly, when I am yelled at I don't really hear what is being said, I just hear the yelling. Nothing productive comes out of yelling at a student.

As far as learning about participation in a decomacracy, children are always in a democratic enviornment. The U.S. is a democracy. Classrooms are for the most part a democracy. Households are democracies. We are just brought up in them, that we never really question it for the most part.

  8. How much control do you believe teachers should have over their students?
I believe that teachers need to have complete control over their students. If you have no control things become a wreck and students tend to run over the rules, bend and break them! What im trying to say is respect is a want. If you do not give it you will not recieve it and students are just as important as teachers are. The job of a teacher is to teach the students and you must have control to do this.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.
Not at all. Yelling does not accomplish anything it is an embarrassing thing to do and will not speed up any learning process. If you feel like you need to yell then something is wrong and maybe a one on one talk can help. Nothing good comes out of yelling.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?
The U.S is a democracy which tends to carry throughout the classrooms and even households. Learning about world wide events and different elections also help children learn to participate and understand how important the world is to us.

  9. How much control do you believe teachers should have over their students?

I like the low control approach. I think that control is essential, while not being overbearing or stifling to the students. It seems more productive to have low control, to allow the students to contribute opinions and feel free to ask questions. Teachers should have control over the classroom, enough so that the environment is conducive to learning.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.

I think raising your voice to the point of yelling should only happen in dire situations, like if someone could potentially be hurt. Emotions are impossible to completely stop, but the teacher should be able to contain themselves. I don't like the yelling in the movie Kindergarten Cop. I think that order and control can be attained with out yelling. The teacher sets the example for the class to follow.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?

I think that children learn to participate in democracy at home and at school. At home, they are part of a functioning democracy. They are included in a democracy with family from discussions to decisions. At school, the classroom should feel like a community and the student should be engaged in the classroom democracy. Working on group projects, class competitions and choices are all types of democratic actions the students are participating in daily.

  10. Teachers should have control of the classroom the students should have control of their thoughts, feelings, and actions. The environment should still be a learning environment where students feel comfortable to express how they feel about the different subjects.

Maybe if you are extremely passionate about a certain subject matter or you have an emotional connection with some material. But that is a strong maybe; I think that it is necessary to keep a professional attitude in the classroom at all times.

They learn to participate in democracy every day by working together. The kids set goals and work toward common goals.

  11. How much control do you believe teachers should have over their students?
I think teachers should have full control of their students. When teachers have low control I think the students may try to run over the teachers. They might consider them a weak teacher. When a teacher has full control the students will notice that right away and probably say hay this teacher don't play.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.
I don't think its appropriate for teachers to yell and the students, I know its hard, but the teacher should be able to use other methods of trying to get their point across. You don't want to frighten the kids by yelling it courage them from being able to talk to you when they have a problem.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?

They do that in school everyday. Maybe they don't realize it, but when they attend a student council meeting or vote who will be the next class monitor. Just attending school and working together they learn to participate in a democracy.

It is hard to balance control in your classroom. I agree that it is incredibly difficult to get a group of small children to listen, but they also need to be given a decent amount of freedom if you want to be able to connect with them. Children like to know that they are their own person, and that their voice matters. They need to feel respected, and not like they are simply caged animals.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.

I absolutley think it is NEVER appropriate to raise your voice or react emotionally in front of your students. You must ALWAYS keep your cool because you reacting that way could now only scare the children, but cause more chaos. If a child feels frightened by their teacher, the are less likely to come to you with problems. You want your children to always feel as though they can come to you if they need to.

  13. How much control do you believe teachers should have over their students?

I feel that teachers should have a good control over their class as a whole. That doesn't mean that I feel like they should be dictators. I think that the teachers should be the ones to set the rules and the pace of the classroom and that the students should follow them. I also think that the classroom should be a place for students to feel like they can grow and have an open mind, as long as it is done in a respectful way. Boundaries are a good thing to have as a teacher and the students should be well aware of what those boundaries are.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.

I don’t think that it is truly ever a good thing for a teacher to react emotionally to the students. I think that if you are having an issue with a student, you should pull back for a second and think about what would be the best solution before reacting. You do not want to embarrass a child in front of all of the other students nor do you want to embarrass yourself. Maybe during a work time for the students, the best thing would be to talk to that person individually and tell that that their behavior wasn’t appropriate or let them know how they need to control their behavior in the classroom. Honestly I feel that losing your cool in front of a group of students is never a good answer.

  14. PART 2

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?

I thikn that it is important to teach this to children at a young age. It is something that they will have to deal with their entire lives. Just as everyone above has stated, we vote for student council or prom king or queen, these are just like voting in the real world. Setting common goals are other ways to do this. Every day life is a democracy whether we realize it or not.

  15. How much control do I believe teachers should have over their students?
I believe teacher should have enough control to create a good learning environment based on the way the teacher runs the class. Also it depends on the class. As we get to know our students will then be able to better estimate how much control we will need. If the teacher has a hard time grasping the student's attention there will need to be more control then a class that is focused.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at students? Explain why or why not.
Yes, I think it is appropriate to yell at students but only when necessary. If a student begins to misbehave repetitively then they should be yelled at. It is important to maintain respect from your students and for them to know the boundaries by which they must behave within. Yelling should not be an everyday occurance, but I think it is essential to maintain respect, and for students to behave appropriately.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?
Children learn about democracy from kindergarten to senior year in high school. Each year they learn more and more. In kindergarten they learn to share, and treat others the way you want to be treated. As they grow up they are helpers in a class and become in charge of an aspect such as line leaders, or hand out papers. The children know that this is their job for the week and they abide by it and help out in the classroom (community). In middle and high school, students can participate in student governments of some sort. As we grow we learn to participate more and more.

  16. How much control should teachers have over their students?
I don’t like the term “control”, I prefer the term “structure”. I think that a classroom definitely needs the right amount of structure and guidelines, but not too much. Kids are naturally free-spirited, but I think teachers should encourage that to a certain point. If a kid can’t spread their wings a little bit in the classroom, they’ll feel confined and start to dislike even going to school. In order for learning to take place, you need fun. In order to have fun, you can’t run a classroom like a drill sergeant would.

Is it ever appropriate to yell at your students?
Only in certain circumstances do I think it’s necessary to raise your voice in a classroom. If a classroom is completely out of control you have to raise your voice in order to be heard. It’s important to explain to your students what they’re doing wrong so they understand, instead of shocking them by yelling. They’ll never learn that way.

How do children in our society learn to participate in a democracy?
Children don't know they're learning about democracy everyday, but they are experiencing it. A simple vote to decide what project the students would rather do that day is participating in democracy. Actaully, making any decission on their own is kind of like participating in democracy because no one person has complete control.
